Erman was born in Berlin, October 31, 1854. His father was Georg Adolf Erman, and his grandfathers were Paul Erman and Friedrich Bessel.
Erman educated at Leipzig and Berlin. He became associate professor of Egyptology at the University of Berlin in 1883 and full professor in 1892.
In 1885 he became director of the Egyptian department at the royal museum. In 1934 he was excluded from the faculty of the university because he was one quarter Jewish. He and his family were not prersecuted by the Nazi, as they converted to Protestantism, but they lost all their positions. Erman taught at the University of Berlin, and his many students, among whom were G. Steindorff and K. Sethe, formed the gifted and influential circle of Egyptologists known as "The Berlin School, " long without rival. Erman died in Berlin on June 26, 1937.
