Logical analysis of the fundamental concepts of our thinking is the main task of philosophy according to Phalen. His analyses of the concepts of reality in 1924 and change in 1918 provide good illustrations of his method of conceptual analysis. The naive concepts of common sense contain contradictions, and their dialectic is reflected in the development of philosophy. The investigation of this process is an essential task of the study of the history of philosophy. Several of Phalen’s contributions to the study of the history of philosophy are of great interest, for example, 1912 and a posthumous book on Kant’s epistemology. Like Hägerström Phalen rejects subjectivistic epistemology. According to him the idea of subject-objectivity is absurd, but yet implied by many epistemological theories of various philosophical traditions. In his most comprehensive work, Zur Bestimmung des Begriffs des Psychischen (1914) several of the great problems in the philosophy of mind are dealt with, and the theories of Bergson. Husserl. James. Miinsterberg. Wilhelm Wundt and other eminent philosophers and psychologists of Phalcn’s time are critically examined.
