(This "Battery of Tests" has been created to be administer...)
This "Battery of Tests" has been created to be administered to public and private school Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students, to adults, and to potential employees. The series can also be used to determine language proficiency in languages other than English making the battery of tests useful for companies seeking to employ multi-lingual talent. "The Battery of Tests" appears to be quite useful to institutions who need accurate assessments of multi-language speakers. It certainly can provide a bench-mark for evaluating students as well as employees in-house in quite a number of languages. Being an assessment test, it is rather dry and unappealing necessitating users to make clear to test-takers the importance of results. "The Battery of Tests" is a useful tool for those who require an off-the-shelf standardised language competency tool.

(On Crimes and Punishments by Cesare Beccaria was a best s...)
On Crimes and Punishments by Cesare Beccaria was a best seller throughout the American colonies. It was known by all of our Founding Fathers, and used in the deliberations of the Continental Congress as well as in the deliberations of the Constitution Convention. John Adams quoted from the book in 1768, and in 1770 in the case of the Boston Massacre. Thomas Jefferson, on the other hand, used Beccaria’s book almost entirely for the Bill On Proportioning Crimes and Punishments. It was used with the abolition movement, in practically all cases relating to capital punishment, and most recently in two separate US Supreme Court decisions. Beccaria’s great admirer, Sean L. Green, says it best: “On Crimes and Punishments is one of the greatest treatises in the democratic tradition, a testament to human freedom and social justice. For students of law or political theory (of which I am one) this is an excellent account of some of the fundamental principles of democratic society and jurisprudence. Anyone who holds public office should be forced to read this book at gunpoint.”

(In these various essays, written over a period of twenty ...)
In these various essays, written over a period of twenty years while serving as a foreign language teacher and Director of a K-12 Bilingual Department, Adolph (Adolfo) Caso reacted to various educational situations while championing the need for limited or non English-speaking foreign students to maintain fluency in their native languages. Adolfo came to America when eleven years old. Because he only spoke his native dialect, in effect he should have been considered and classified as semi-lingual). He completed only the first grade in his native country before World War II began; then, after entering the American School System as a sixth grader, he successfully completed all of the public school graduation requirements without any native language assistance. Having been placed in French classes, before long, he was more fluent in that language rather than his own. Nevertheless, he finished his bachelor degree from Northeastern University and his Arts Master degree from Harvard. In this collection, Adolfo deals with issues of foreign language student placements, the misunderstanding of bilingualism on the part of many educators, and the artificial importance given to foreign language studies at the expense of bilingualism. He even deals with the potential role of Swahili in the public school systems. For those interested in applied linguistics, Adolfo proposes a new alphabet system commensurate with the needs of the pervasive computer age.

(There is a widespread belief among Americans that the den...)
There is a widespread belief among Americans that the denigration of a part does not harm the whole. Americans of Italian descent in particular have been the butt of this misconception: the whole group has suffered for the shady reputation of a few. The intention of this book, which contains fifty short biographies of men and women of Italian descent who have contributed to America's greatness, is to help rectify this tragic mistake. The American land has given us all the potential to perfect ourselves, of which we have not taken full advantage. The greatness of the men and women whose lives are summarized here should pervade our very spirits, and make all of us a better people. From Columbus to Petrone, from Vigo to Giannini, from Paca to Sirica, from Caruso to Sinatra, the American of Italian descent have contributed in the most significant ways to the development and enhancement of our American culture. Yet as a whole, this group has suffered the most unmerited brutalities and un-necessary prejudices at the hands of fellow Americans. From the lynching in Louisiana to the senseless mafia craze perpetrated by the media, these Americans are singled out more frequently and stereo-typically than any other individual. Stereotyping one always stereotypes the whole.
