He graduated from the Saint John"s College in Waterford and then obtained master"s degree from Columbia University along with a doctorate from the Concordia Seminary.

From 1923 to 1970 he worked as a pastor at the Saint Mark"s Lutheran Mission in Yonkers. He died on July 3, 1988, at the age of 89. He have three sons James, Richard and Paul, the later two of which are pastors in California.
He also has a daughter Ione Mensing who resides in Hillside, New Jersey with 13 grandchildren.
