Studied at Wellington College With Ceylon Rifles, 1866-1873. Transferred on disbandment of this corps to His (or Her) Majesty 66th Foot (Royal Berkshire), serving in this Regiment till 1883. Exchanged to 2nd West Yorkshire, 1884.
Retired on half-pay 1647 after being in command for four years, 1899.
Commanded the 2nd West Yorkshire, 1895-1899, including the Ashanti Expedition, 1895-1890 (despatches, Companion of St. Michael and St. George, star). Commanded 2nd W. Yorkshire Regiment on the occasion of Her Majesty’s jubilee in London, 1897 (.Jubilee medal, 1897). Served as Deputy - Assistant - Quarter master-General on Sir Charles Gough’s Staff at Lucknow in 1887.
Also with Sir Michael JBiddulph at Rawal Pindi as Transport Officer in charge of the Ameer of Cabul’s Camp in 1885. Commanded 4th West Yorkshire Regiment in South Africa, 1900 (despatches, medal and clasp, King’s medal with two clasps). Commandant, Green Point, Cape Town, and officer commanding troops, St. Helena, 1902-1903 (during seven months of this period was, in addition, Acting Governor of St. Helena).
Retired 1903. Recreoitions: rowing, shooting. Late commanding 2nd W. Yorkshire Regiment.
Spouse 1887, Esther Jane, young daughter of late J. Barrett of York House, Karachi.
