Trained as a dentistry assistant and though he enlisted with the Free French Forces after the beginning of the Second World War, he came out of the army with some top French military decorations.
After working for the Health Department, he entered active party politics in 1951, was appointed Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in December 1958 and became Minister of Agriculture from February to May 1959.
On May 31, 1959, he was elected for Guena to the Legislative Assembly and his full-hearted support of President Tombalbaye helped him to return to the cabinet in June 1960 as Minister of Stock-breeding and Water Supplies.
He was appointed Minister for Agriculture from August 1960 and was re-elected to the National Assembly as a Deputy in March 1962. In the reshuffle that followed President Tombalbaye added Waters and Forests to his portfolio, before switching him back to Agriculture in March 1963. From December 22,1963, he became President of the National Assembly until December 1968. In May 1971 he was appointed Minister of National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs and finally Minister for Party Organisation in December.
He has climbed as high as possible in Chad politics without actually becoming President and was one of the top ministers. His task is to sustain the ruling party, which is in the throes of permanent reorganization, and maintain it as an effective political force. This task demands extensive political influence, tactful handling of personalities and loyalty to the President.
