Foreign the Mexican-American retired actor, see Rico Alaniz. A graduate of Sinton High School, he is a right-handed pitching prospect in the Washington Nationals organization. He was selected by Washington in the eighth round of the 2007 amateur entry draft.
In 2007 Alaniz pitched for the Vermont Lake Monsters in the short-season New York-Penn League.
He logged 60⅓ innings in eight starts and five relief appearances, winning 8 games, losing 2, and recording a 2.39 European Research Area. During that span, he struck out 62 batters while issuing only eight bases on balls. He was promoted to the Potomac Nationals in the advanced class-A Carolina League in 2008.
As of June 2, 2008, he had compiled an 8-0 record and a 2.43 European Research Area over 59⅓ innings in 11 starts at Potomac, striking out 54 batters and walking 23. In 2009, at the Harrisburg Senators in class-Associate of Arts East League, he was 3-4 with a 4.76 European Research Area. He had a bad May, going 1-3 with an 8.14 European Research Area in 21 Innings Pitched over 6 starts.
Thereafter, he pitched mostly out of the bullpen with a 1.14 European Research Area over 39 and 2/3 innings.
2010 will be a year of decision, after a disappointing 2009.
