Education
Ahmed was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Communications and Electronics Engineering from the Cairo University. In addition, he has a Pre-Master in Computer Engineering from Cairo University and a Master of Science in ITI from the University of Nottingham.
Career
As Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed has led the construction of the first privately owned and independently operated submarine cable in the Gulf region, with onward connectivity to Europe, Africa and Asia. Ahmed has over 18 years experience in the telecom sector across the Middle East and North Africa region. He has a well established network of senior business relationships with the major communications companies in the region, and prior to founding, worked with numerous companies across the region on projects encompassing both telecoms infrastructure and satellite communications.
GBI is the Middle East"s first privately owned, carrier neutral, regional cable operator.
Deploying the latest fiber optic technology, GBI has a comprehensive cable system connecting all the gulf countries together and providing onwards connectivity to Europe, Africa and Asia. Prior to founding GBI, Ahmed worked on projects encompassing both telecom"s infrastructure and satellite communications.
Ahmed has taken a leading role on a broad range of business opportunities including the acquisition of an existing telecom operator, investing in telecom ventures in Europe, investing in Group Special Mobile licenses in Africa and acquiring a license for a country"s international gateway for voice and data. September 2013 – Global Telecoms Business includes Ahmed Mekky in the 2013 Global Telecoms Business Power 100 list November 2012 – Pacific Telecommunications Council elects Ahmed Mekky as the first Middle Eastern Chief Executive Officer to their Board of Governors for a three year term October 2012 – Global Telecoms Business includes Ahmed Mekky in the 2012 Global Telecoms Business Power 100 list March 2012 – Pacific Telecommunications Council appoints Ahmed Mekky as the first Middle Eastern Chief Executive Officer to their Board of Governors November 2011 – SAMENA Telecommunications Council appoints GBI as the inaugural Subsea Working Group chair, Ahmed Mekky to lead.

September 2012 - Appointed as Board Member of The Egyptian Information Technology Industry Development Agency, ITIDA, which is the executive Information Technology arm of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
