Ajay Maken is the current Housing and Poverty Alleviation Minister of India and member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India. He represents the New Delhi constituency of Delhi and is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He was following in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle Lalit Maken, who was also a renowned trade union leader.

Ajay Maken is married and has three children.

Education

Ajay Maken, was elected the President of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1985, having the rare honor of being the only B.Sc Chemistry(Hons)- Final Year student to serve this post.

Achievements

  • Ajay Maken was involved in creation of the new Master Plan for Delhi MPD-2021 that brought an end to sealings and demolition in the city and established inclusive growth parameters.

  • As Transport Minister he supported and implemented CNG (compressed natural gas) based Public Transport System in Delhi that earned world-wide accolades for being an environment public transport system.

Om Prakash Maken responded to the clarion call of Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 and took part in the freedom struggle.He was arrested by the British Government and sent to jail. In recognition of his services, Late O.P.Maken was presented the “Tamara Patra” by the Indian Government which he received with all humility but surrendered the Freedom Fighters pension towards the “Prime Ministers Relief Fund”.

Lalit Maken was a member of Parliament of India, a political leader of Indian National Congress and a labour union leader. Maken was the son-in-law of late President of India Mr. Shankar Dayal Sharma. In the year of 1984, He was elected to the Loksabha, a directly elected lower house of the Parliament of India from South Delhi of India. He was a metropolitan Councillor prior to his election to Parliament of India.He was an extremely promising young politician and a popular trade union leader. Lalit Maken and his wife Gitanjali, the daughter of former president Shankar Dayal Sharma, were gunned down by Harjinder Singh Jinda, Sukhdev Singh Sukha and Ranjit Singh Gill alias Kukki outside Mr. Maken's Kirti Nagar residence in West Delhi on July 31, 1985.
