Akamatsu Kosaburo was born in 1831 in Shinano Nagano Prefecture. He was the son of the chief of the Ueaa clan. He was assassinated by Toshiaki Kirino.

Akamatsu Kosaburo was born in 1831 in Shinano Nagano Prefecture. He was the son of the chief of the Ueaa clan. He was assassinated by Toshiaki Kirino.
He studied Dutch and the Zodiac calendar under Kansai Uchida and then accompanied Yasuyoshi Katsu to Nagasaki to study navigation.
Later he founded a school in Kyoto and advocated parliamentary government in 1866, and was also asked to teach members of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) clan. By order of Hisamitsu Shimazu, Lord of Satsuma clan, he translated the English Drill Code. He was active in the movement to restore peace between the Imperial Court and Shogunate.
