Akamatsu Noriyoshi was one of the founders of the Imperial Navy.
Background
Akamatsu Noriyoshi was born at December 13, 1841 in Fukagava. His former name was Daisaburo. Second son of Yunoshin Yoshizawa, a police officer of the Tokugawa Shogunate, he was adopted as soon by Noriyosm Akamatsu, whose name he inherited.
Education
Having learned the Dutch language when young, he taught at the Shogunates' Institute For Investigation of Foreign Books (Bansho Torishirabedokoro). Nagasaki Navy School under Dutch teachers, visited Holland in 1862 when the Shogunate ordered a warship to be built in that country, returning to Japan in 1866.
Career
He served in the Imperial Government after the Shogunate was overthrown and became vice-admiral in the Imperial Navy and Commander-in-chief of the Yokosuka Naval Base, contributing much to the education of naval officers, naval administration and warship construction. For his meritorious services, he was created a baron.
