Akamatsu Renjo was born in 1841 in Kanazawa.
He entered a monastery in 1860 and soon rose to become head priest of Tokuoji Temple in Yamaguchi where he studied Shinshu Buddhism. Shortly after was sent to Europe for further studies by the Honganji Temple, to become the first Japanese priest to have studied abroad.
Upon returning he took an active part in separating Shintoism from Buddhism. Later as priest of Honganji Temple did much to promote education among temple priests and improve administration in temples. In 1899 he was appointed resident of Buddhist University.
He was an eloquent speaker without a compeer in his days.
