Background
Akane Taketo was born in 1839 in Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture). He was the son of Miyake Matsuzaki, a physician and was called Mikinosuke.

Akane Taketo was born in 1839 in Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture). He was the son of Miyake Matsuzaki, a physician and was called Mikinosuke.
Adopted as son by Masahira Akane, he was a disciple of Umpin Umeda of Kyoto and learned swordsmanship under Yakuro Saito in Yedo.
He took an active part in the Kiheitai, a pro-imperialist corps, in the turbulent days near the end of the Tokugawa regime. In the Choshii-seibatsu, or the war between the Shogunate and the Choshu (Yamaguchi) Clan, he mediated between the radical group of Shinsaku Takasugi, and the group of opportunists in the Choshu Clan. Takasugi misunderstood Akane's intentions and Akane was imprisoned as a result. He killed nimself while in prison.
