Was the first sumo to be accorded the top rank of Grand Champion, his heyday being in the Kan-ei Era (1624-43). He sponsored and participated in a number of Kanjm Sumo (wrestling tournaments for the purpose of collecting contributions to religious funds) in Yedo.
Became famous when he defeated his noted rival, Jindayu Maruyama, in a tourmament in the presence of the Emperor in Kyoto.
