Akatsuki Hoshiemon was born in 1759.
He started his career of crime in Ôsaka. When young he was punished with tattooing for robberies he committed in Osaka. He fled to Saigoku, or Western Japan, where he joined a gang of pirates. He narrowly escaped arrest at Shimonoseki, fled to Shikoku and then stole into Yedo under the false name of Kihachi Osakaya. Settling with his family in Hongo in Yedo, he stole from many rich households. Some ancient gold coins he pawned at a pawnshop led to his arrest. He was decapitated in Asakusa in Yedo and his head was gibbetted.
