Akhilesh completed his schooling from the Dholpur Military School in Rajasthan.
He is the youngest person to have held this office in the state of Uttar Pradesh at the age of 38 years. He pursued his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Environmental Engineering from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore. In 2000, Yadav was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha from Kannauj in a by-election of 2000.
He also held membership in the Committee on food, civil supplies, and public distribution.
He was also Re-elected to the 15th Lok Sabha for the third term in the year 2009. On 15 March 2012: At the age of 38 years, he became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
He is said to have assisted the party"s rise from 97 seats in the 2007 Vidhan Sabha Elections to a total of 224 and hence was elected the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh by the party"s MLAs. As Chief Minister

On 10 March 2012: Akhilesh Yadav was appointed as the leader of the Samajwadi Legislative Party in Uttar Pradesh.
He came to the political front for the first time when he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha in Kannauj in 2000. In 2004-2009: Re-elected as a member of the 14th Lok Sabha for the second term. On 5 May 2012: Became the Member of Legislative Council in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
