After his father was dethroned by Motochika Chosogabe, he retired to Nariyama Village in Tosa and devoted himself to research in paper manufacturing. He succeeded in making seven new kinds of colored paper, presented samples of them to Lord Kazutoyo Yamanouchi, Governor of Tosa. Kazutoyo, greatly pleased, made him magistrate of Hata County and superviser of paper manufacturing in the area. Colored paper making was made his monopoly and exempt from taxation. Since that time the Lord of the Tosa Clan used to present the Tokugawa Shogunate with his colored paper periodically.
