Akiie Kitabatake

In 1333, when the Kamakura shogunate was overthrown and Einpcro Godaigo took over the direction of the government, both he and his father were appointed to high positions. In the eighth month of that year he was put in charge of the province of Mutsu and, in the service of Imperial Prince Yoshinaga, he helped to restore order to the troubled area of Dewa in northern Japan. In 1335, when Ashi- kaga Takauji rebelled, Akiie attacked him and drove him out of his position in Kamakura; the following year he joined with Nitta Yoshisada and Kusu- noki Masashige in pressing the attack on Takauji and forcing him to flee to Kyushu. Akiie then returned to his territory in the north, but Takauji once more rallied his forces and took possession of Kyoto. The emperor ordered Akiie to the attack again, and he fought with the Ashikaga forces at Aono- bara in the province of Mino while marching towards Kyoto, but he failed to gain the upper hand and, obliged to fall back from one position to another, he was finally defeated and killed at Ishizu in Izumi Province.
