Akira Honda was born in Aichi Prefecture.
He graduated from the School of Literature, Tokyo University (1923).
Wrote literary criticism while teaching at the Fukuoka Higher School and then at Kyushu University. Noted especially for his studies in William Shakespeare. During the war, he was prohibited to write because of ms suspected pro-Anglo-Saxon leanings. Was appointed to the present post (1933).
