Akira Komatsu began his education at the age of 11 at Sukeikan (clan school) and later studied the Chinese classics from Zozan Sakuma.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868) was given a high ranking job in the Meiji Government to eventually become Vice-Minister of Education. Resigned Government service (1881) and the following year together with Eiichi Shi-busawa, Takashi Masuda and Yonosuke Mitsui founded the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Akira Komatsu became director of Ryomo Railway Company and of Tokyo Rice Exchange (1879).
