Akitakai Hamuro was born in 1072. Second son of Tamefusa Kajuji, founder of the Hamuro family.

Served Emperors Horikawa, Toba and Sutoku. Much favored by ex-Emperor Shirakawa, he attained great power in the Court by attending the ex-ruler at night. He was nicknamed Yoru-no-Kampaku (adviser to the emperor) of the Night.
