Akiyama Heijuro was a native of Kumamoto.
He was a master doll maker. His dolls were so lifelike that they came to be called iki ningyo, or living dolls, in Yedo. His dolls were shown and used in puppet plays in Asakusa, the plebeian amusement center of Yedo. Among those puppets were the likenesses of characters in Inaka Genji, a popular romance written by Tanehiko Ryutei, and men and women in everyday life, including even a pregnant woman.
