Background
A village headman in Chikugo (Fukuoka Prefecture). Much concerned over the poor irrigation facilities of ricefields along the northern banks of the Chikugo River, he caused the Tokojima Dam to be built to make the river's water available to the ill-irrigated rice paddies. Construction work on the dam was started in 1712. The dam also made nearly 4,000 acres of land with 28 villages free from droughts.
