Education
Fujii studied at Harvard/Radcliffe, where she received a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in government; her undergraduate years are documented from 1978 to 1982. Radcliffe College was the women's college affiliated with Harvard University, and its students received Harvard degrees under the joint Harvard/Radcliffe designation. Radcliffe was merged into Harvard in 1999, when its functions were folded into the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.
She then attended New York University School of Law, where she earned a Juris Doctor between 1984 and 1987. Founded in 1835, the school is one of the oldest law schools in the United States and is located in New York City.
Career
Fujii's legal career began with a clerkship on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, where she served as a judicial law clerk to Judge Murnaghan from September 1987 to August 1988. The Fourth Circuit is one of the federal appellate courts that review decisions of district courts in its region, which includes Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. She was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1988 and to the District of Columbia bar in 1990.
From 1988 to 1996 she worked as a corporate associate at Ropes & Gray, a Boston law firm founded in 1865. Her position there placed her in one of the city's long-established firms during a period when Boston's legal and financial sectors were closely linked.
In 1996 she joined the Boston firm Palmer & Dodge, which later became known as Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP and subsequently as Locke Lord LLP. There she served as corporate senior counsel until December 2013. She advised clients on complex financial transactions, intellectual property protection, and the operational needs of private companies, and she specialized in representing nonprofit entities, including colleges, universities, health care institutions, and community organizations. She also advised tax-exempt organizations on compliance, conflict-of-interest matters, reporting requirements, and endowment policies.
In January 2014 Fujii joined the Office of University Counsel at Tufts University, which was chartered in 1852 as Tufts College and operates campuses in Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts. Her title was later Deputy General Counsel for Business Affairs, and an earlier university contact list identified her as Associate General Counsel for Business and Corporate Affairs. At Tufts she represents the university on transactional, intellectual property, and compliance matters, including work with the procurement department, the research office, technology transfer, and advancement operations.
Her Tufts work also included participation in a National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) briefing on the use of institutional resources in the pandemic response, as well as contract matters for a university faculty housing task force.
