Studied at Edinburgh Academy and University. (Bachelor of Arts) Germany. Passed into Bengal Civil 30G Sendee and went to India 1862.
Was successively Assistant and Joint Magistrate, Assistant Settlement Officer, Settlement Officer, Magistrate and Collector. Officiated as Commissioner of Excise, and as Opium Agent. Was Commissioner of Agra and Rohilkhand.
Member of the Board of Revenue, United Provinces. Member of the Legislative Council, United Presbyterian. Acted as Lieutenant-Governor, United Presbyterian, from January to November 1895 member of the Council of His Excellency the Viceroy from February to May 1896.
Was member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy for two years prior to retirement in October 1897. Indian Civil Service (retired).
