Alan Du Bois obtained a bachelor's degree in art education (1958) at New York's State University in New Paltz. In 1966 he completed a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Related Arts at Indiana University. In 1970 he attended a Summer Institute for Arts Administration at Harvard University.
Since 1966 Alan Du Bois has been assistant director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Prior to that he was director of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland. Before being associated with museums, he worked as an art teacher in the Public School System in Newburg, New York (1958-1960; 1963-1964), and as a graduate assistant in the Art Department at Indiana University (1960-1963). Since 1971 he has been building a collection of works by living American photographers at the Museum of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg.
Alan Du Bois is a member of CAA, the American Association of Museums and the Florida Art Museum Directors Association. He also belongs to Society for Photographic Education and has been serving as the secretary/treasurer of their Southeast Region since 1977. In 1972 and in 1975 he was granted an NEA Museum Professional Fellowship.
