Alan studied at Queen's University of Belfast in Belfast, United Kingdom. In 1991 he became a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in the area of obstetrics. in seven years he received a degree of the Doctor of Medicine. In 2016 he became a Doctor of Science.
Alan worked as a pre-registration house officer of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, United Kingdom from 1991 to1992. Un this year he became a senior house officer of the department of dermatology at the Royal Hospitals Trust. He worked there until 1994. In this year he worked as a senior house officer of the general medicine and Hepatology. From 1994 to 1995 Alan was an in-lieu registrar at the department of dermatology. Since 1995 he worked at the division of molecular medicine at Queen's University. He worked there until 1996.

In 2000 Alan was a clinician, scientist fellow of pediatrics dermatology of the Children's Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He worked there for a year. Since 2001 he was a senior lecturer of human genetics, honorary consultant dermatologist at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee, Scotland. Since 2002 Alan was a consultant of pediatrics dermatologist at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Dublin.
