He attended Princeton University where he got an Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law where he received a Bachelor of Laws, 1960. He served as a United States. Marine Corps Corporal, 1953–1955, was in private practice in Honolulu 1960-1986, and was director of the Legal Aid Society in Honolulu 1968-1971.
