Educated at Sheffield University, and gaining his Doctor of Philosophy from that university in 1987, Winton trained for ministry at Lincoln Theological College and was ordained a deacon in 1991.

His first post was as a Curate in Southgate, in the Diocese of London. Later he was Priest in charge of Street Paul"s Walden, then Chicago Mercantile Exchange Officer for the Street Albans Diocese. Finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) he was Rector of Welwyn.
During the latter part of that appointment, from 2007 til 2009, he was also an honorary canon of Street Albans Abbey.
