Joined North York Rifles, 1877. 58th Regiment, 1879; served the Zulu War, 1879 (medal). Occupation of the Transvaal.

Battles of Laings Nek (despatches, Victoria Cross), Ingogo, Majuba Hill, severely wounded. In 1883-1885 served in Natal, Capetown, and Zululand. 1887-1892, Adjutant Militia Northampton Regiment.
1893-1895, South.S.O., Bangalore, India.
1897, officiating A. Attorney - General, Mandalay, Burma. 1897, Tirah Campaign and march down Bara Valley. Victoria Cross; late Northampton Regiment.
