(A group of American soldiers manages to survive over the ...)
A group of American soldiers manages to survive over the course of World War II, from the Battle of Britain to the fall of the Third Reich. Along the way, a number of unfortunate incidents occur. White soldiers violently abuse fellow black soldiers, a deserter is summarily executed on New Year's Eve and a sergeant takes advantage of a shell-shocked French woman. War is hell for the winners and the losers in this episodic meditation on the horrors that exist on and off the field of battle.

Albert Finney was born on May 9, 1936, in Salford, United Kingdom; the son of Alice (née Hobson) and Albert Finney.
Albert Finney studied at Salford Grammar School (now Buile Hill Academy). Later he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art which he graduated in 1956.
Albert Finney started his career as an actor when he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He played Mr. Hardcastle in Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer. In 1956 Finney was given the role in the Vanbrugh Theatre's student production of Ian Dallas's play The Face of Love, as Shakespeare's Troilus. Later he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Finney was offered a contract by the Rank Organisation but turned it down to perform for the Birmingham Rep. He was in a production of The Miser for Birmingham Rep, which was filmed for the BBC in 1956. He made his first appearance on the London stage in 1958, in Jane Arden's The Party. He understudied Laurence Olivier at Stratford-upon-Avon, eventually acquiring a reputation as 'the new Olivier'. In 1960, Finney starred in the gritty and breakthrough film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning where he portrayed a disillusioned factory worker.
In 1963 Albert Finney starred in the Academy Award-winning 1963 film Tom Jones, directed by Richardson and written by Osborne. He followed this with a small part in The Victors. He then made his Broadway debut in Luther in 1963. In 1967, Finney returned to films with Two for the Road co-starring Audrey Hepburn. In 1968, he directed himself in Charlie Bubbles and three years later produced the Chandleresque homage Gumshoe, in which he also starred as Eddie Ginley, a bingo-caller with delusions of becoming a private eye. In 1972 Finney returned to the stage after a six-year absence with Alpha Beta, which he later filmed for TV with Rachel Roberts. Finney served as artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre from 1972 to 1975.
In 1974, Finney played Agatha Christie's Belgian master detective Hercule Poirot in the film Murder on the Orient Express. After that he decided to take time off from features and focus on stage acting, doing the classics at the National Theatre in London. Finney made a TV movie Forget-Me-Not-Lane in 1975, which was written by Peter Nichols, and he also performed a cameo role in The Duellists. In 1981, he started to think about returning to films. He starred in the film Loophole and after that he played in such films as Wolfen, directed by Michael Wadleigh, and Looker, written and directed by Michael Crichton. In 1983, he appeared in the film The Dresser. He made several television productions for the BBC in the 1990s, including The Green Man, A Rather English Marriage, and the lead role in two plays, Karaoke and Cold Lazarus in 1996 and 1997.
Albert Finney also played the title role in the television series My Uncle Silas, based on the short stories by H. E. Bates, about a roguish but lovable poacher-cum-farm laborer looking after his great-nephew. The show ran for two series from 2000 until 2003. He also tasted success with starring roles in Erin Brokovich, Big Fish, and The Bourne Ultimatum. His final movie credit was in the James Bond thriller Skyfall in 2012.

Quotations:
"It's true that old actors don't die, their parts get smaller. You're less likely to get the part, many parts, if you're playing people your age as opposed to people who are younger. There are fewer parts around."
"Unlike writers or painters, we don't sit down in front of a blank canvas and say, 'How do I start? Where do I start?' We're given the springboard of the text, a plane ticket, told to report to Alabama, and there's a group of people all ready to make a film and it's a marvelous life."
"I don't think that we necessarily lie. I mean, we make our living by pretending that we're someone else. I don't tell tall tales. I always tell the truth."
"To be a character who feels a deep emotion, one must go into the memory's vault and mix in a sad memory from one's own life."
Albert Finney was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, British Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.
Albert Finney was a private man. He volunteered relatively little information about himself over the course of his career. Finney was a serious actor, and he chose not to exploit his fame. For the most part, he carefully selected his screen projects. He did not have an agent or a manager. Finney was not much smitten with Hollywood, never tempted to attend an awards ceremony, even when nominated. He also turned down an offer of knighthood twice.
Quotes from others about the person
Julia Roberts: "It was my terrific joy and privilege to work with Albert. His talent was eclipsed only by his enormous heart."
Albert Finney married Jane Wenham in 1957. The marriage produced a son. Finney and Wenham divorced in 1961. In 1970 Albert Finney married French actress Anouk Aimée. The marriage lasted for eight years. He then married for the third and last time in 2006, to Penelope Delmage, who at the time was working as a travel agent. They remained together until Finney's death.
