Commissioned ensign United States Navy, January 1, 1881. Promoted through various grades to rear admiral, July 29, 1915. Temporary vice admiral and admiral World War.
Reverted to rank of rear admiral after the war and later advanced to admiral on the retired list.
Served in Hartford, S. Atlantic Station, in Plymouth and Texas on N. Atlantic, Nipsic on European Station, Trenton and Monocacy on Asiatic Station. Member board of Mgrs. Naval History Society, since 1934.
Married Evelina M. Heap, June 12, 1889. Children: Mistress Anne Heap Van Metre, Mistress Evelina Porter Cohen.
Order of Weng Hu, 1st Class (Chinese). Commander Legion of Honor (French). Presented with gold and jeweled sword by citizens of Nashville, 1919.
