Colonel Jones went to the Philippines in 1940 and took command of the 31st US Inf Regiment. The next year he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of the 51st Inf Division, Philippine army. On 24 December 1941, when Maj Gen George M. Parker, Jr, became head of the Bataan Defense Force, Jones replaced him as CG, South Luzon Force (SLF).
General Jones directed the SLF’s delaying action to Bataan, and took charge of US and Filipino forces that were still east of the Pampanga River on 31 December 1941. The strategic Calumpit bridges were blown the next day after being used by most of the friendly troops including elements of Wainwright’s North Luzon Force. Jones commanded his 51st Division on Bataan until 10 March 1942, when he succeeded WAIN Wright as CG. I Corps, on Bataan (OCMH Chron, 28). After the surrender on 9 April 1942 Jones come through the death march and survived 40 months as a POW. He was promoted to major general on 16 March 43. Major General Jones retired on 31 July 1952.
