Came to United States, 1867, and first began as a teacher of German, teaching a class of young ladies at the Leavenworth (Kansas) High School Entered journalism at Chicago, 1869, on Illinois Staats Zeitung. Removed to New York, 1871, working on New York Sun and Herald, until 1882, when founded the Morning Journal of New York (now called The American), which conducted until 1895, when, owing to ill health from overwork, sold the paper and retired to Europe.
