He attended the city’s public schools of Portland, afterward entered the University of California at Berkeley as a student in Architecture.
A few years after graduation he began work in Tacoma, then in 1902 moved to San Francisco, Calif., where he practiced for a few years in association with Charles Peter Weeks.
In 1916 Mr. Sutton returned to his native city of Portland and there entered into partnership with H. A. Whitney (Sutton & Whitney). The firm soon acquired a considerable practice, planned a number of important buildings in Portland, also did considerable work in Tacoma where they opened a branch office. Among Sutton & Whitney's executed designs were the large Multnomah County Hospital, the Shrine Hospital, and the J. J. Hill Office Building in Portland, and the National Bank Building, Scottish Rite Cathedral, Rust Building, and the Presbyterian Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.
