Privately and by traveling Studied chemistry in early life, and afterwards in South Africa did much analytical work for prospectors. Was the youngest member ever elected on the Executive of the Cape Town Young Men's Christian Association, and a member of six South African literary societies.
Assisted in production of 1902 Reformers’ Year Book, and in same year founded the Young Britons’ Society, of which he is now Honourable.
