Came to America, 1859. Civil engineer on rys. during Civli War. Started school of engineering, Pittsburgh, 1865, later moved to Chicago.
Institution destroyed by great fire, 1871.
Removed to San Francisco, 1874. President The A. Van der Naillen School of Engineering (chartered), Oakland, California Was one of the first to make public experiments in wireless telegraphy and X-ray, both of which he went to Europe to study.
