The George Mitchell story is classic in its devotion to hard work and individual initiative, as well as inspirational in its simplicity. By keeping in close touch with the Maine voters, listening to their ideas and viewpoints, he gained their trust and respect. As Democratic Senator from Maine, he began his public career without having been elected to any local, state, or national office. In 1980, he was appointed by Maine's Governor Joseph Brennan to fill the unexpired term of Senator Edmund Muskie. At the next election, George Mitchell won his own seat in the US Senate. After serving only eight years, the Democratic majority handed him the second most powerful position in the country, the gavel of the Senate Majority Leader.
