Alec E. Gores

Background

Gores was born in 1953 in Nazareth, Israel. His family moved to Flint, Michigan, in November 1968, when he was fifteen, and his father operated a grocery store after the family’s arrival in the United States. Gores was the oldest of six children and worked in the store during his youth.

He was raised in Flint and attended Genesee High School in Genesee, Michigan. The family’s move placed his adolescence within the industrial and manufacturing environment of mid-twentieth-century Michigan, where Flint was closely associated with the automobile industry and General Motors.

Education

Gores attended Genesee High School in Genesee, Michigan, before studying computer science at Western Michigan University. He earned his degree in 1977.

Western Michigan University, founded in 1903 in Kalamazoo, developed as a public institution serving southwestern Michigan and expanded during the twentieth century into a comprehensive university. Its computer-science education provided Gores with the technical background that preceded his entry into computer sales and business software.

Career

Gores began his professional life as a computer programmer at General Motors. He soon moved from corporate employment into entrepreneurship, using financing from his father to establish Executive Business Systems in 1978. The Michigan company developed and distributed vertical business-software systems and computer equipment; within seven years it employed more than 200 people and had become a major value-added reseller in the state. CONTEL acquired the business in 1986.

After selling Executive Business Systems, Gores began acquiring and operating non-core and underperforming businesses for corporate and investment purposes. In 1987 he founded The Gores Group, a private-equity firm built around acquiring controlling interests in mature and growing companies and working with their management teams.

Under Gores's leadership, The Gores Group pursued technology, telecommunications, industrial, healthcare, media, entertainment, and business-services investments. Its transactions included the carve-out of businesses such as The Learning Company and Connection Machines, and the firm states that it has completed more than 125 acquisitions since its founding.

From the mid-2010s onward, Gores also became a prominent sponsor of special-purpose acquisition companies. Gores-affiliated vehicles supported combinations involving companies including Hostess Brands, Verra Mobility, United Wholesale Mortgage, Luminar Technologies, Ardagh Metal Packaging, Matterport, and Polestar. He remains the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of The Gores Group and lives in the Los Angeles area.
