Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.
Soth received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College in 1992.
Soth has participated in individual and group exhibitions since 1993. He made a self-printed book entitled "Sleeping by the Mississippi" when traveled around the Mississippi River. Alec became known when one of the photographs entitled "Charles" from that book was used as a poster for the 2004 Whitney Biennial.
Soth published the book "Niagara" in 2006. He made several more photographic books including "Fashion Magazine", 2007, "Dog Days, Bogota", 2007, "The Last Days of W", 2008, "Broken Manual", 2010 and "Songbook", 2015. Alec has photographed for The New York Times Magazine, Fortune and Newsweek. He, together with writer Lester B. Morrison, created "Broken Manual" from 2006 to 2010. In this book, Soth investigates the places in which people retreat to escape civilization and photographs monks, survivalists, hermits, and runaways.
In 2008, Alec founded Little Brown Mushroom, a small arts institute and publishing house, through which he collaborates with writers and other photographers to publish books and magazines. Also since 2008 he has been a member of Magnum Photos agency. At the photo exhibition 2016, titled "Hypnagogia", was featured 30 images from Soth's 20-year exploration of the state between wakefulness and sleep.
In addition, over the course of one-year, Soth photographed individuals in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Eastern Europe. All of his pictures are portraits of subjects taken in their own homes or interior spaces.
