He was Professor and Head of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Queen Mary College, University of London, 1954-1978, then Emeritus, and Vice-Principal, Queen Mary College, 1966-1978. Young was educated at Caius College, Cambridge (Wrangler, Mathematical Tripos, 1935. Master of Arts). He was awarded an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1964, and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1973.
He was awarded the Ludwig-Prandtl-Ring from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luftund Raumfahrt (German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics) for "outstanding contribution in the field of aerospace engineering" in 1976.
He is buried in the Jewish Section of Cambridge City Cemetery.
