Served from Manassas to Appomattox in C.S.A. in Virginia as major on staff in the field. Admitted to bar, 1866, and practiced at Shreveport, Louisiana. Elected 42d Congress, 1872.

Judge District Court of Louisiana, 1876-1880. United States district judge, Western District of Louisiana, since 1881.
