Among the numerous other public posts at one time held by Dr. Deustua may be mentioned: secretary of the Peruvian Legation to Argentina. Charge d’affaires in Argentina. Confidential minister to the Holy See. Dean of the Faculty of Letters of the University of San Marcos. Senator from Callao and Lima. At various periods in his life Dr. Deustua has also been connected with newspaper work.

DEUSTUA, Alejandro was born on March 22, 1849 in Huancayo. Son of Remigio Deustua and Toribia Escarza.

Views

Deüstua is considered one of the ‘founders' of Latin American philosophy. Deeply influenced by the thought of Karl Christian Krause (1781— 1832). Deüstua believed that ‘liberty is the essence of grace'.

He applied the concept of creative evolution to aesthetics, arguing that only in aesthetic activity is creative liberty fully expressed because only in this phase of existence is the imagination freed from resistance. Deüstua had a close affinity with the ideas of the Mexican thinker Jose Vasconcelos and, at age 90, wrote a book on his aesthetics.
