Professor in the University of San Marcos, 1869. Secondary school teacher in Callao, 1870. Subsequently professor in the Naval School.
Director-general of justice and instruction in the Ministry of Education, 1895. On a government mission to Europe to study primary and secondary education, 1898. Aided in the reform of secondary education, 1901.
President of the Cabinet, 1902. Member of the Superior Council of Education, 1907. Director of the National Library, 1918.
Peruvian delegate to the Hispanic American Congress of Madrid and to the Pan-American Congress of Washington. Appointed rector of the University of San Marcos in 1928, retiring shortly thereafter to private life. Among the numerous other public posts at one time held by Dr. Deustua may be mentioned: secretary of the Peruvian Legation to Argentina.
Charge d’affaires in Argentina. Confidential minister to the Holy See. Dean of the Faculty of Letters of the University of San Marcos.
Senator from Callao and Lima. At various periods in his life Dr. Deustua has also been connected with newspaper work.
Deüstua is considered one of the ‘founders' of Latin American philosophy. Deeply influenced by the thought of Karl Christian Krause (1781— 1832). Deüstua believed that ‘liberty is the essence of grace'.
He applied the concept of creative evolution to aesthetics, arguing that only in aesthetic activity is creative liberty fully expressed because only in this phase of existence is the imagination freed from resistance. Deüstua had a close affinity with the ideas of the Mexican thinker Jose Vasconcelos and, at age 90, wrote a book on his aesthetics.
