Lipkovski was born on March 31, 1955 in Istanbul, Turkey; the son of Trajko and Dostana (Bojadzieva) Lipkovski.

Lipkovski received a bachelor`s degree in 1975, master`s degree in 1978 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics in 1985 from the University of Belgrade.

Lipkovski was born on March 31, 1955 in Istanbul, Turkey; the son of Trajko and Dostana (Bojadzieva) Lipkovski.
Lipkovski received a bachelor`s degree in mathematics from the University of Belgrade in 1975. Ten years later he earned his master`s degree in mathematics form the same university. Also in 1985, Aleksandar was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics from the University of Belgrade.
Lipkovski began his career as an assistant researcher at Military Aeronautical Institute in 1978. A year later he took a position of a teaching assistant and chairman of Numerical Methods Department at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Mathematics.
In 1986, he became an assistant professor and an associate professor in 1995 at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Mathematics. Since 2004 Lipkovski has been working as a professor at that university. Also he served as a vice-rector at the University of Belgrade from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, Aleksandar was appointed a deputy minister for higher education at the Ministry of Education, where he served until 2008.
Since 2013 he has been a chairman of Algebra and Mathematical Logic Department at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Mathematics. Aleksandar was a researcher at Moscow State University, Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics and Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn.
Lipkovski is a member of American Mathematical Society.
On September 29, 1979 Aleksandar Lipkovski married Jasmina Markovic. They have two children.
