Aleksandr ALEKSANDROV, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Composer and choirmaster. Doctor of Arts; People's Artiste of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics from 1935; major-general; professor, Moscow Conservatory from 1922; founder and director, Soviet Army Song and Dance Ensemble from 1928. Order of Lenin; two Stalin Prizes (1942, 1946); diploma 1st class and gold medal at World’s Fair, Paris (1937). Communist Party member from 1939.
Education
Studied music at the Imperial Chapel in St. Petersburg, and at the Conservatory (under Liadov and Glazunov). 1913 graduate composition and singing classes under Professor Vasilenko and Professor Mazetti, Moscow Conservatory.
Career
1913-1918 music teacher and choirmaster in Tver’, where he organized music school. 1918-1922 instructor, Moscow Conservatory. 1922-1928 choirmaster, Moscow State Chamber Theater.
1926-1930 conductor. State Choir. 1928 founded Red Army Song Ensemble (Subsequently known as the Soviet Army Red-Banner Song and Dance Ensemble) at the Centr Club of the Red Army, Moscow. Also known as the Aleksandrov Ensemble, this choir sings to the balalaika, the domra and other folk instruments and is extremely popular in the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and abroad, where it has made many guest appearances.
