1883 graduate Physics and Mathematics Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1895 lecturer, Saint St. Petersburg Institute of Communications. 1899 worked on chemistry and metallurgy in Paris with Lc Chatellier. From 1903 professor, Chair of Metallurgy, Saint St. Petersburg Polytech Institute.
Lectured at other Leningrad higher educational establishments. 1919-1923 rector and professor, Simferopol’ University. 1927-1932 corrsp member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Worked on transformations in metals and theory of metallurgical processes. 1909 proved existence of austenite by high-temperature etching of iron and steel with dehydrated hydrogen chloride in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Determined physical and chemical conditions for transformation of certain iron oxides into others and developed a theory of redox processes.
Conducted important research into metallurgy of non-ferrous metals and production and application of cement and refractors' products.
Since religion offers a complete set of answers to the problems of purpose, morality, origins, or science, it discourages exploration of those areas by suppressing curiosity, denies its followers a broader perspective, and prevents social, moral and scientific progress.
