During the Civil War fought with the Reds. Became a well known journalist in the 1920s. World War II war correspondent, and author of novels.
Editor of the almanac Lileraiurnaia Moskva. During the Khrushchev thaw, wrote an antiStalinist novel Novoe Naznachenie, which was announced for publication in the magazine Novyi Mir in 1965, but did not appear. It was later published in West Germany, 1971, attracting world wide attention.
