From 1930 associate, then senior associate. State Academy of the History of Civilization (subsequently Institute of the History of Civilization and now Institute of Archeology), Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously professor, Leningrad University.
Led 20 archeological expeditions to Semircch’ye, Tyan’-Shan’, Altay, Pamirs and Fergana Valley. Discovered remains of Saka culture in Centr Asia. Laid foundations of research on permanent settlements in Semirech’ye, central Syr-Dar’ya and Fergana.
Compiled chronology of archeological relics of Centr Asia from 2,000 British Columbia to 15th Century AD. Attributed particular importance to Huns in ethnogenesis of Centr Asia. Also studied history of Centr Asian art, epigraphy and numismatics.
