Attache in the Press Dept, of the MID (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), 1957-1960. Member of the Soviet Delegation at the United Nations, 1960-1966. 2nd Secretary, and then 1st Secretary of the Secretariat of the MID, 1966-1970.
1st Secretary, and councillor at the USSR Embassy in the USA under Dobrynin, 1970-1983. Head of the USA Dept, in the MID, 1983-1986. Deputy Foreign Minister of the USSR from May 1986.
