1902 debut as singer. 1906-1936 soloist, Bolshoy Theater, Moscow. Helped found Opera Studio of Bolshoy Theater and assisted Stanislavsky in running the studio.
Active member, AU-Russian Theatrical Social. Chairman, corporation of solo artistes of Bolshoy Theater. From 1930 artistic manager, Stanislavsky Opera Theater.
Accomplished exponent of Russian national repertoire. Often appeared in chamber and symphony concerts. Roles'. Levko in Rimsky-Korsakov's Mayskaya noch' (May Night) and Snegurochka (The Snow Maiden), etc.
